On February 4, 2025, Tiger Woods, one of the greatest golfers in history, announced the passing of his mother, Kultida Woods, who died at the age of 80. The golf icon shared a heartfelt tribute to his mother on social media, recalling the profound impact she had on his life and career. In his post, Woods expressed deep sadness, stating, “I am devastated to announce that my beloved mother has passed away. She was truly an extraordinary person, and her strength of character is beyond words.” Woods went on to share that his mother was his "biggest fan and supporter" throughout his journey in the world of golf.

Woods’ mother, Kultida, was known for her passionate involvement in his career. She was a constant presence at his games, often seen cheering him on from the stands. Just a week before her passing, Kultida had attended Woods' screen golf event in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where he playfully acknowledged her from the crowd, saying, “Hello, Mom! I won’t mess up today like last time.” Her unwavering support was not just emotional, but also practical, as she played a key role in driving Woods to tournaments and training sessions from an early age.

In an earlier speech at the USGA Bob Jones Award ceremony in 2024, Woods reflected on his family’s influence on his career. He explained, “While people often think my father, Earl, was the central figure during my tours, the truth is my mother was the one who held everything together at home. She was with me through both good and difficult times.” Woods attributed much of his success to the nurturing and guidance his mother provided, which played a pivotal role in shaping his character and achievements.

Kultida Woods was born in Bangkok, Thailand, where she worked as a civilian secretary for a US military office before meeting Earl Woods, a Green Beret, whom she married. The couple moved to the United States in 1968, eventually settling in Cypress, California, where they raised their son, Tiger. Throughout Woods' rise to fame, Kultida was a steadfast presence, making countless sacrifices to ensure her son’s success, including driving him to numerous golf events and practices.

Kultida’s influence extended beyond her emotional support; she played a role in shaping Woods’ iconic game-day look. As a Buddhist, she believed that the color red brought positive energy, which led Woods to adopt the red shirt and black pants combination that became his trademark on Sundays. Woods once shared that his mother suggested he wear the color red during his matches because of its significance to his astrological sign, Capricorn, and its symbolic power.

Woods' mother was present for many of his most memorable victories, including his 1997 Masters win, where she watched him claim his first major championship. In 2019, after Woods overcame a lengthy slump to win his fifth Masters title, Kultida was there by his side, sharing in the joy of his long-awaited triumph.

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, also expressed his condolences on social media. In his post, Trump acknowledged Kultida’s influence on Woods' remarkable achievements, writing, "She has left for greener fairways, but her impact on Tiger will never be forgotten. Kultida gave him strength and excellence that shaped his greatness." PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan also paid tribute, saying, “We recognize that Tiger’s greatness and humanity were inspired by the love and support of his mother, Kultida. We will always treasure the memories of her influence.”

Tiger Woods’ legacy in the world of golf is intertwined with the profound support and guidance of his mother, Kultida. Her passing marks the end of an era, but her influence on Woods’ life and career will continue to resonate as a guiding force for the golf legend, whose accomplishments have transcended the sport and inspired millions worldwide.
